Description
Curled in a classic C-shaped flexion, the 8-week conceptus is shown in profile with the head occupying a large proportion of the crown-rump length and a visibly lengthening trunk. Lateral to the developing face, the optic vesicle region and early external ear contours are suggested, while the upper and lower limb buds project from the ventrolateral body wall with early digital rays beginning to separate. Inferiorly, a prominent ventral abdominal wall marks the umbilical region, where the umbilical cord exits and runs distally to a comparatively large placental disc; without the amniotic sac, the chorionic and fetal surfaces are unobstructed. Week eight sits at the transition from embryonic to fetal period, when organogenesis has established the basic body plan and disproportionate cephalocaudal growth starts to shift toward the trunk. That anatomy is clinically familiar: failure of midgut return and ventral body wall closure around the umbilical ring underlies omphalocele and gastroschisis, and this is also the window when limb patterning errors can produce syndactyly or longitudinal deficiencies. Scale matters here. The placenta appears large relative to the fetus, a useful reminder that early placental development and umbilical cord formation are central to normal growth even before the fetus gains substantial mass.
