Description
Positioned at the left ventricular outflow tract, the aortic valve sits superior to the interventricular septum and inferior to the ascending aorta, its three semilunar cusps forming a tri-radiate closure line in systole and diastole. A lateral section view typically brings the left ventricle into profile with the aortic root anterior and superior, and may include the sinuses of Valsalva immediately distal to the valve annulus. The aortic valve lies medial to the left atrial appendage and posterior to the right ventricular outflow tract, with the fibrous continuity between the aortic root and anterior mitral leaflet often suggested even in simplified renderings. This lateral perspective matters because it clarifies the geometry of the aortic root, where cusp coaptation depends on the relationship between the annulus, sinotubular junction, and sinuses rather than on the cusps alone. It is the view you want when explaining why aortic stenosis from calcific degeneration restricts systolic opening, or how aortic regurgitation can follow dilation of the ascending aorta and sinotubular junction even with relatively preserved cusp tissue. Short axis diagrams teach leaflet count, but lateral section teaches flow.
