Description
Anterior elevation of the male zygomatic region centers on the os zygomaticum (malar bone) as it forms the lateral prominence of the cheek and the inferolateral margin of the orbital aperture. The zygomaticofacial surface lies lateral to the maxilla and inferior to the frontal bone, with the zygomaticomaxillary suture marking the transition medially toward the infraorbital region. Superiorly, the frontal process of the zygomatic bone approaches the frontozygomatic suture at the lateral orbital rim, while laterally the zygomatic process extends posteriorly toward the zygomatic arch (arcus zygomaticus). Clean bony landmarks. Surgeons and trauma teams read this anatomy first when evaluating zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures: flattening of the malar eminence, step-offs at the infraorbital rim, and disruption at the frontozygomatic suture are pattern-defining findings. This anterior orientation also tracks clinically to the infraorbital nerve as it exits the infraorbital foramen of the maxilla just medial and inferior to the zygomaticomaxillary junction, a common source of cheek and upper lip hypoesthesia after midface trauma. Reduction and fixation often target the lateral orbital rim and zygomaticomaxillary buttress, so the spatial relationships here match operative thinking.
