Description
Cut through the heart in transverse section, the anterior leaflet of the mitral valve (cuspis anterior valvae mitralis) dominates the left atrioventricular junction, extending from the mitral annulus toward the left ventricular cavity. Superior to the leaflet lies the left atrium, while inferior and slightly anterior sits the left ventricle, with the leaflet forming part of the boundary between inflow and outflow. Medially, the leaflet approaches the aortic root in fibrous continuity via the aortomitral curtain; laterally it relates to the posterior leaflet across the orifice. Chordae tendineae descend distally from the free edge toward the papillary muscles. This slice matters when you want to teach or recognize the aortomitral continuity and the way the anterior leaflet functionally couples the mitral valve to the left ventricular outflow tract. A classic clinical tie-in is systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, where the anterior leaflet is displaced anteriorly toward the interventricular septum and narrows the LVOT, often producing a posteriorly directed mitral regurgitation jet. Transverse anatomy also supports clear explanations of mitral valve prolapse, rheumatic restriction, and annular calcification by showing where the leaflet hinges and how the orifice is shaped in cross-section.
