Anterior Presentation of the Male Neck

Seen from the anterior aspect, the adult male neck (collum) is defined by the paired sternocleidomastoid muscles descending obliquely from the mastoid processes to their inferior attachments on the manubrium and medial clavicles. Between their medial borders lies the anterior cervical region, where the laryngeal prominence of the thyroid cartilage sits in the midline, superior to the cricoid cartilage and the first tracheal rings. Inferiorly, the suprasternal (jugular) notch and the sternal heads of sternocleidomastoid frame the root of the neck, while the clavicular heads mark the transition laterally toward the supraclavicular fossae. Defining the sternocleidomastoid borders matters because they partition surgical and clinical landmarks used every day: the anterior triangle (submental, submandibular, carotid, and muscular triangles) sits medial to the muscle, while the posterior triangle lies posterior to it. An anterior presentation also supports teaching of airway and thyroid examination, since the thyroid gland typically straddles the upper trachea deep to the infrahyoid strap muscles, and enlargement can shift or obscure midline contours.
