Description
Centered in the vaginal vault, the uterine cervix is shown with the ectocervix surrounding the external os and the endocervical canal extending superiorly toward the uterine cavity. Around the squamocolumnar junction (transformation zone), the surface appears erythematous and edematous, with loss of the usual smooth, pale squamous sheen. Irregular patches of friability, punctate hemorrhage, and mucopurulent material at or emanating from the os suggest an inflamed columnar epithelium and reactive change along the portio vaginalis. Cervicitis is a practical diagnosis because it is often made at speculum examination, not on imaging, and the transformation zone is where infection and dysplasia intersect. Mucopurulent cervicitis is classically associated with Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhoeae, while a diffusely friable cervix with contact bleeding raises concern for trichomoniasis, herpes-related ulceration, or, in the wrong context, cervical neoplasia masquerading as inflammation. That distinction matters when you are deciding between empiric treatment, STI testing, and expedited colposcopy, and when you are explaining why cytology can show inflammatory atypia that still requires appropriate follow-up. Ideal for undergraduate gross anatomy and reproductive system modules when instructors want to connect normal cervical landmarks to common clinic findings.
