Suspended within a blurred red plasma field, a single monocyte appears as a large leukocyte bounded by a thin, translucent plasma membrane, its pale cytoplasm surrounding a prominent reniform (kidney-shaped) nucleus. Fine intracytoplasmic granules and organelle-like inclusions scatter through the cytosol, consistent with the azurophilic granules and lysosomal compartment typical of a circulating phagocyte. The nucleus occupies an eccentric position rather than sitting centrally, a practical cue for distinguishing monocytes from lymphocytes on a peripheral blood smear. Monocyte morphology matters because this cell is the circulating precursor of tissue macrophages and many dendritic cell populations, and its appearance changes in predictable ways during inflammation and hematologic disease.
