Description
Demodex is rendered as an elongated acarine arthropod with a compact anterior cephalothorax and a tapered opisthosoma extending posteriorly. Short, stumpy legs cluster on the anterior third of the body, with paired appendages around the gnathosoma positioned for scraping and feeding at the skin surface. A striated cuticle and segment-like annulations run longitudinally along the posterior body, giving the mite its characteristic cigar-shaped profile. Fine mouthparts sit most anterior, oriented in line with the long axis. Clinical relevance comes from where Demodex lives and what its anatomy enables. The gnathosoma and anterior legs anchor the mite within pilosebaceous units, a detail that matters when explaining why high mite density correlates with facial erythema, papulopustular rosacea phenotypes, and cylindrical dandruff at the lash base in Demodex blepharitis. Scale and orientation help clarify why mites are often recovered from epilated eyelashes or expressed follicular contents, and why acaricidal therapy must penetrate follicular openings rather than act only on the skin surface.
