Rendered as a circulating leukocyte, the cell’s dominant feature is a large, round nucleus occupying most of the intracellular volume, with only a thin rim of peripheral cytoplasm separating it from the plasma membrane, a morphology most consistent with a lymphocyte rather than a granulocyte. Numerous short membrane projections (microvilli-like protrusions) contour the cell surface, creating an irregular silhouette that contrasts with the smoother biconcave profile of neighboring erythrocytes you might expect in a blood smear. Color is used to separate compartments, with nuclear material and cytoplasm visually distinct from the outer membrane topography. No lobulated nucleus or obvious cytoplasmic granules are implied. This morphology matters because lymphocyte identification remains a core competency in hematology and immunology teaching, and it also frames how clinicians think about reactive versus neoplastic processes when reviewing peripheral blood. A small, mature-appearing lymphocyte with a high nuclear-to-cytoplasmic ratio differs from atypical lymphocytes seen in EBV infection (more abundant basophilic cytoplasm) and from lymphoblasts in acute lymphoblastic leukemia, where finer chromatin and nucleoli alter the diagnostic impression. Surface projections also cue the biology: membrane receptors and microdomains drive antigen recognition and immune synapse formation, a useful bridge between cell structure and function.
