Description
Curving along the inferolateral margin of the external nose, the ala nasi (nasal wing) forms the rounded contour around the naris and continues posteriorly toward the alar-facial groove where it meets the cheek. From a lateral perspective, the soft tissue envelope corresponds to the underlying lower lateral nasal cartilage (alar cartilage), with its lateral crus supporting the alar rim and its medial components converging toward the columella anterior to the nasal vestibule. Superior to the ala, the nasal tip complex transitions toward the dorsum, while inferior and slightly posterior the alar base blends into the upper lip region at the nasolabial junction. Small, clinically relevant surface landmarks, including the alar crease and the margin of the nostril, are clear reference points. Surgeons and injectors care about this angle because alar contour is where aesthetic goals collide with airway mechanics. Subtle changes in support of the lateral crus can lead to external nasal valve collapse, a common contributor to nasal obstruction after rhinoplasty and a frequent indication for alar batten grafts or lateral crural strut grafting. Even minor edema, scarring, or over-resection at the alar rim can produce alar notching and asymmetry that reads immediately on a lateral profile. It is unforgiving. Facial anatomy courses and rhinoplasty chapters use this type of lateral ala-focused illustration to teach alar base reduction planning, nostril sill relationships, and safe incision placement along the alar-facial groove.
