Description
Posteriorly oriented anatomy frames the gastric cardia at the gastroesophageal junction, where the abdominal esophagus enters the proximal stomach at the cardiac orifice (ostium cardiacum). The cardia lies superior to the gastric fundus and immediately inferior to the esophageal hiatus, with the lesser curvature positioned medially and the greater curvature sweeping laterally. From this dorsal perspective, the cardiac inlet sits just left of the midline, and its mucosal transition toward the stomach becomes easier to localize against the adjacent fundic contour. Spatial relationships are clear. Clinical work around the cardia often comes down to millimeters. Endoscopists use this region to define the Z line and the proximal extent of Barrett esophagus, while surgeons and GI radiologists reference the cardia when describing a type II or III hiatal hernia and proximal gastric involvement.
