Description

Adult male rectum is presented with emphasis on the lateral flexure (flexura lateralis recti), placing the rectal ampulla inferiorly as the bowel curves through the lesser pelvis toward the anal canal. The rectosigmoid junction lies superiorly, where the sigmoid colon transitions into the rectum as the gut tracks along the anterior surface of the sacrum (flexura sacralis recti). Medial and lateral walls are differentiated to make the side-to-side deviation of the rectal lumen clear in anatomical position. Understanding the lateral curvature matters when you plan transanal and transrectal procedures, because instruments and endoscopes meet predictable resistance where the rectum departs from a straight axis and follows the sacral concavity. This is the bend that can increase looping during flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy and can also influence how you interpret apparent angulation on contrast enema or CT colonography, especially near the rectosigmoid. A common landmark. It also frames where extrinsic compression from pelvic pathology or postoperative scarring may exaggerate a normal curve and mimic intrinsic stricture. Use this artwork in gross anatomy teaching on hindgut topography, in endoscopy training materials to explain scope handling at the rectosigmoid, or in colorectal surgery and radiology publications discussing rectal configuration and pelvic approach planning in male patients. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
