Description

Filamentous hyphae form a branching mycelial network across the substrate, with septate filaments crossing and anastomosing to create a meshwork typical of hyphomycetes. Erect conidiophores project from the hyphae and terminate distally in rounded conidial heads, where chains or masses of conidia accumulate at the apices. Blue-toned hyphae sit against a textured growth surface, while purple color has been applied to highlight sporulating elements. False color only. For clinical microbiology, distinguishing Fusarium from Aspergillus hinges on the reproductive structures, since both present as hyaline, septate molds on microscopy and both can produce acute-angle branching in tissue. Fusarium characteristically produces canoe-shaped macroconidia and smaller microconidia from phialides, and in histopathology it more often shows adventitious sporulation and angioinvasion that correlates with positive blood cultures in disseminated fusariosis, unlike aspergillosis. That differential matters in neutropenic patients and after corneal trauma or contact lens wear, where Fusarium keratitis is a classic, treatment-resistant presentation.
