Description
Occipital groove for the occipital artery is highlighted on the inferior aspect of the temporal bone, cut into the mastoid part as a narrow, shallow furrow. From this fixed inferior perspective, the groove lies medial to the mastoid notch (incisura mastoidea), the bony recess that gives origin to the posterior belly of the digastric muscle. The mastoid process sits lateral and posterior in the frame, while nearby landmarks on the temporal base, including the stylomastoid region and the transition toward the occipitomastoid suture, provide orientation for the artery’s course along the skull base. Subtle topography matters here. Clinically, the occipital artery (a branch of the external carotid artery) is encountered in posterior cervical dissections and in scalp procedures where it becomes a target for ligation, flap pedicles, or management of bleeding from lacerations in the occipital region. Because the occipital groove is close to the mastoid notch and the digastric attachment, it helps trainees understand how vascular structures relate to palpable landmarks used during mastoid surgery planning and posterior auricular incisions, where dissection planes can stray toward the artery. The inferior viewpoint makes the artery’s bony guide easy to teach as a spatial relationship, not a memorized fact.
