Description
Palmar skin of the adult male middle finger (digit III) is presented in anterior view, from the fingertip pulp to the proximal segment where the finger joins the palm at the metacarpophalangeal flexion crease. Distal and middle phalanges are outlined by the distal interphalangeal and proximal interphalangeal creases, with the digital pad positioned distally and centered on the volar surface. Medially and laterally, the finger’s contours imply the courses of the proper palmar digital neurovascular bundles along the margins, while the central volar skin remains thicker and more tethered to the underlying fibrous septa. Palmar finger creases and pads are not decorative landmarks, they map skin adherence and joint level, which is why clinicians use them to localize the DIP and PIP joints during examination, injections, and splinting. Lacerations across the volar aspect at the level of the flexion creases raise immediate concern for flexor digitorum profundus and flexor digitorum superficialis tendon injury, and for digital nerve compromise along the radial and ulnar sides.
