Description
An anterior view centers on the right colic flexure (flexura coli dextra), the sharp bend where the ascending colon turns medially and superiorly to continue as the transverse colon. Superior and anterolateral to this segment, the inferior surface of the liver lies in close apposition, with the hepatic flexure typically tucked beneath the right lobe. The colonic wall and haustra frame the curvature, with the ascending colon positioned lateral to the terminal ileum and cecal region and the transverse colon crossing the upper abdomen from right to left. Spatially, the hepatic flexure marks a common point of relative fixation compared with the more mobile transverse colon, because peritoneal reflections and the right colic attachment can tether it to the posterior abdominal wall near the liver and gallbladder bed. That relationship matters in colonoscopy, where negotiating the right upper quadrant turn can be technically demanding, and in right upper quadrant pain patterns that can mimic hepatobiliary disease when colonic distension or colitis involves the flexure. It is also a key landmark for right hemicolectomy planning and for understanding the watershed territory around the proximal transverse colon, where borderline perfusion can contribute to ischemic colitis in low-flow states.
