Description
Viewed from an inferior standpoint, the posterior basal bronchopulmonary segments (segmenta basalia posteriora, S10) occupy the most dependent portion of each lower lobe and sit posterolateral to the mediobasal segment (S7) where present. Their pleural surfaces curve superiorly to meet the posterior thoracic wall, lying posterior to the oblique fissures and inferior to the superior segment of the lower lobe (S6). Color coding isolates the basilar anatomy so the right and left S10 territories can be compared at a glance. Clear segmental boundaries. Posterior basal segments matter because gravity and airway anatomy conspire to make them frequent endpoints for aspirated material and dependent atelectasis in the supine patient. In bronchoscopy or segmentectomy planning, distinguishing S10 from adjacent basilar segments guides selective bronchial access (B10) and segmental lymphatic drainage patterns, and it helps explain why posterior lower-lobe opacities often track to a specific bronchopulmonary segment on CT. This angle also clarifies why posterior chest wall contact can localize pleuritic pain and percussion findings to the lower lobes.
