Dermatophyte tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) often presents in predictable patterns, and this plantar, vesicular morphology aligns with an inflammatory dermatophytosis rather than the classic interdigital-only form. Clinically, the eroded, macerated toe webs matter because they act as a common portal of entry for secondary bacterial infection, including cellulitis and erysipelas of the foot and distal leg, and they also coexist with or precede onychomycosis of the toenails. Distinguishing this from palmoplantar psoriasis or dyshidrotic eczema hinges on border activity, annular spread, and response to topical corticosteroids, which can mask dermatophyte infection (tinea incognito) and worsen the burden.
