Description
Entering the right ventricular outflow tract from an internal anterior section, the pulmonary valve appears at the junction of the infundibulum with the pulmonary trunk, its three semilunar cusps arranged symmetrically around the valvar orifice. Each cusp forms a pocket that opens toward the pulmonary trunk and coapts centrally in diastole, while the commissures mark the peripheral attachment of the cusps to the arterial wall. Superior to the valva trunci pulmonalis lies the proximal pulmonary trunk, and inferior to it the smooth-walled conus arteriosus funnels blood from the right ventricle toward the outflow. This anterior sectional perspective suits teaching the one-way mechanics of semilunar valves and the relationship of the ventricular outflow to the great vessel wall, details that can be hard to conceptualize from external heart views.
