Description
Talus anatomy is centered here on the medial malleolar facet, a smooth articular area on the medial side of the talar trochlea, seen from a posterior viewpoint. Along the medial margin of the trochlear surface, the facet lies medial to the talar dome and faces the medial malleolus of the tibia, while the posterior aspect of the trochlea transitions inferiorly toward the subtalar articular region. Posteriorly, the talar body contours toward the posterior process and the region where the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon normally courses in its groove between the tubercles. Articular cartilage boundaries are crisp. This specific facet matters because it defines congruence at the medial side of the talocrural (ankle) mortise, the same interface stressed in supination external-rotation injuries that produce medial malleolar fractures or deltoid ligament disruption. Malalignment after fixation or malunion can shift contact pressures onto the medial trochlear margin and contribute to post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis, while osteochondral lesions of the talar dome often require orientation to nearby articular landmarks during arthroscopy and preoperative planning. A posterior viewpoint is useful for teaching how the medial malleolar facet relates to the posterior talar contour, a region also scrutinized when posterior ankle impingement is suspected and when differentiating variants such as an os trigonum from fracture fragments.
