Description
Arising from the right main bronchus shortly after the carina, the superior (apical) segmental bronchus of the right lower lobe is isolated as a tertiary bronchus directed superiorly and posteriorly toward segmentum superius (B6). Its takeoff lies inferior to the right upper lobe bronchus and distal to the origin of the bronchus intermedius, making the branch point easy to orient in standard anatomical position. The segmental lumen sits centrally within the parenchyma it aerates, with accompanying segmental pulmonary artery branches typically coursing alongside while segmental veins run more intersegmentally. Small but defining. Recognition of the right superior segmental bronchus matters in bronchoscopy and thoracic surgery because B6 is a frequent site for dependent secretion retention and post-obstructive infection, and it is a common target during segmentectomy for localized disease. Clear understanding of its direct relationship to the right main bronchus and bronchus intermedius helps prevent wrong-segment cannulation and supports accurate endobronchial navigation when sampling a posteriorly directed lesion. This branching pattern also underpins interpretation of CT airway reconstructions when mapping a segmental collapse or mucus plugging to a specific bronchopulmonary segment. Pulmonology teams can drop this figure into bronchoscopy teaching files to reinforce right-sided airway orientation at the level of the tertiary bronchi, while radiology faculty will find it practical for correlating B6 opacification with a segmental bronchus on multiplanar CT. It also suits operative planning material for right lower lobe segmentectomy, and anatomy course content covering bronchopulmonary segments and their surgical boundaries.
