Description
Sectional anatomy through the right ventricular outflow tract isolates the left sinus of the pulmonary trunk (sinus of Valsalva), positioned immediately superior to the left semilunar cusp of the pulmonary valve. An anterior perspective places the pulmonary trunk anterior and slightly leftward relative to the ascending aorta, with the valve ring at the junction of the infundibulum and the arterial root. The sinotubular junction forms the superior limit of the sinus, while the cusp free margin projects centrally toward the valve orifice. Small space, big consequences. Clinical teaching around semilunar valves often defaults to the aortic root, so a focused look at the pulmonary trunk sinus helps prevent a common mental swap in trainees when they move from systemic to right-sided anatomy.
