Description
Anterior to the lumbar vertebral bodies, the abdominal aortic plexus forms a dense autonomic network draped over the abdominal aorta from the aortic hiatus toward the aortic bifurcation. Fine nerve fibers converge around the origins of the celiac trunk and superior mesenteric artery, then continue inferiorly along the aortic wall as intermesenteric and inferior mesenteric components, with paired lumbar splanchnic nerves approaching from a posterolateral direction. Prevertebral ganglia and interconnecting cords sit medial to the psoas major margins, while the vertebral column, lower rib cage, and pelvic ring provide bony orientation in the background. Color contrast separates nerves from accompanying vascular channels. Clear landmarks. Understanding this plexus matters because it is the main conduit for sympathetic and visceral afferent traffic to the foregut, midgut, and hindgut, and it is easily disturbed during aortic and retroperitoneal surgery. An anterior view mirrors the exposure in open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair and aortoiliac reconstruction, where dissection near the aortic bifurcation can injure hypogastric (superior hypogastric) continuation fibers and contribute to postoperative retrograde ejaculation in men.
