Description
Beneath the reflected dermal layer of the male nose, the alar part of the nasalis appears as a small, curved slip of skeletal muscle hugging the margin of the anterior naris. Its fibers lie superficial to the lateral crus region of the alar cartilages and run inferomedially toward the alar rim, where they blend with adjacent superficial musculoaponeurotic tissue and neighboring nasal slips. Medial to it, the paired nasal openings frame the columellar region, while superiorly the muscle sits below the nasal bones and over the upper lateral cartilages. Alar nasalis is easy to overlook in gross facial dissections, but it matters when you need to explain how subtle contractions alter nostril caliber and nasal valve behavior. This anterior, subdermal perspective helps when planning or teaching approaches that elevate the nasal soft-tissue envelope, such as open rhinoplasty or alar base procedures, where small muscular slips can contribute to postoperative alar notching, asymmetry, or dynamic flare if they are divided or reattached unevenly. Small structure. Real functional consequences. Faculty often choose this view for head and neck anatomy labs, facial expression modules, and plastic and reconstructive surgery teaching files where students must distinguish nasalis from levator labii superioris alaeque nasi and the perinasal fibers of orbicularis oris. It also fits well in atlas plates or journal figures discussing external nasal valve mechanics, alar retraction, or operative steps in alar base reduction.
