Description
Alveolar process of the maxilla frames the superior dental arch as paired bony plates curving in a U-shape from the canine region posteriorly toward the maxillary tuberosities. Along the inferior margin, the dental alveoli form a scalloped ridge, with interalveolar septa separating adjacent sockets and the alveolar crest marking the most coronal extent of supporting bone. Medially, the alveolar process blends with the palatine process to complete the hard palate, while anteriorly it approaches the anterior nasal spine and the piriform aperture; superiorly, it transitions into the body of the maxilla beneath the infraorbital region. Trabecular bone fills the socket walls, and the cortical plates are appreciably thinner on the buccal aspect in the premolar and molar segments. Implant planning, extractions, and periodontal assessment all hinge on the thickness and height of this alveolar bone and its relationship to adjacent spaces such as the maxillary sinus and nasal cavity. One frame can still communicate a lot here: the continuous curvature of the arch, the proximity of the apices to the sinus floor in the posterior maxilla, and the way the alveolar crest relates to the palatal vault and the anterior maxillary buttress.
