Description
Scapular head (caput scapulae) occupies the thickened lateral angle of the shoulder blade where the neck of the scapula expands into the glenoid fossa. The glenoid cavity faces laterally with a slight anterior inclination, while the supraglenoid and infraglenoid tubercles sit at its superior and inferior margins for attachment of the long heads of biceps brachii and triceps brachii. Superior to the glenoid, the base of the coracoid process projects anterolaterally, and posteriorly the root of the scapular spine approaches the lateral angle as it continues toward the acromion. Bone landmarks read quickly. Clinically, the lateral angle is the bony foundation for glenohumeral stability, and the rim of the glenoid is where Bankart lesions occur after anterior shoulder dislocation, often accompanied by osseous defects that alter the contour of the fossa. The relationship between the glenoid articular surface and the scapular neck is also central to pattern recognition for glenoid neck fractures and intra-articular glenoid fractures, as well as preoperative planning for total shoulder arthroplasty where version and inclination guide component positioning. By isolating the head of the scapula with crisp cortical definition, the illustration supports teaching of attachment sites and orientation without visual noise from the thorax or proximal humerus. Use this illustration in gross anatomy lab manuals, orthopaedic and sports medicine slide decks on instability and labral repair, and radiology teaching files when correlating 3D bony anatomy with CT of the scapular neck and glenoid. It also fits well in surgical consent documents and publisher figures describing the coracoid, glenoid rim, and tubercles as landmarks for Latarjet and arthroscopic portal planning.
