Description
Infratemporal crest (crista infratemporalis) marks a sharp ridge on the greater wing of the sphenoid, separating the smooth temporal surface superiorly from the infratemporal surface inferiorly. From a lateral cranial perspective, the crest runs obliquely across the greater wing, approaching the region of the inferior orbital fissure anteriorly while remaining medial to the zygomatic bone and temporal fossa boundaries. Nearby osseous landmarks commonly visible in the same field include the lateral margin of the orbit, the sphenoid body medially, and the vicinity of the foramina ovale and spinosum posteroinferiorly. Hard bone detail dominates. Functionally, this ridge is a practical divider between the temporalis bed above and the infratemporal fossa below, and it sits in the same surgical neighborhood as the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve (V3), the middle meningeal artery, and the pterygoid musculature. The infratemporal surface just inferior to the crest contributes to the origin of the superior head of the lateral pterygoid, so fractures or tumor erosion in this area can alter mandibular mechanics and complicate exposure for infratemporal fossa or skull base procedures. The fixed viewpoint emphasizes cortical contours and rim sharpness, which helps when teaching students to identify the greater wing and to distinguish temporal versus infratemporal surfaces without relying on soft-tissue cues.
