Description
Running between adjacent ribs, the external intercostal muscles form the most superficial intercostal layer of the thoracic wall, their fibers coursing infero-anteriorly from the rib tubercle region toward the costochondral junction. A posterior view of the male upper back places the thoracic vertebrae on the midline, with ribs sweeping laterally to define each intercostal space. The scapulae lie posterolaterally over the upper ribs, and a proximal segment of humerus anchors the shoulder contour, helping orient the rib cage beneath the skin. Fiber direction is easy to read.
