Description
Arising from the external carotid artery in the carotid triangle, the facial artery courses anteriorly and superiorly deep to the posterior belly of the digastric and stylohyoid, then grooves the submandibular gland before turning onto the face. At the inferior border of the mandible it becomes palpable as it winds around the anteroinferior edge of the masseter, then runs obliquely toward the angle of the mouth and the lateral nose as the angular artery. Facial muscles such as the platysma, risorius, zygomaticus major, orbicularis oris, and buccinator sit superficial to segments of the vessel, while regional veins track in parallel but often take a straighter, more posterior course. Branching cutaneous nerves of the trigeminal nerve and the cervical plexus are shown in relation to the artery’s superficial facial trajectory. A key landmark. This course matters because the facial artery is both a common target and a common hazard in facial surgery and trauma. Lacerations near the mandibular body or the nasolabial fold can bleed briskly, and the artery’s tortuosity explains why it tolerates movements of the lips and cheeks but also why it can be inadvertently caught during intraoral incisions. Its terminal angular segment anastomoses with the dorsal nasal branch of the ophthalmic artery, a clinically relevant connection when planning filler injections and when understanding potential routes for retrograde embolization to the retina. Use this artwork in head and neck anatomy teaching to link surface landmarks to the external carotid system, and in operative or procedural education for submandibular gland surgery, facial flap design, and management of facial trauma or epistaxis-related ligation planning.
