Description
Posterior anatomy of an adult male is rendered with superficial and selected deeper muscles layered over the axial and appendicular skeleton. Superiorly, the trapezius spans from the occipital region and nuchal ligament toward the scapular spine, with the posterior deltoid capping the shoulder lateral to the scapula and the latissimus dorsi sweeping inferolaterally to the humerus to form the posterior axillary fold. Along the midline, the vertebral column anchors the paraspinal muscle mass, while inferiorly the gluteus maximus covers the posterior pelvis and hip, the hamstrings descend along the posterior thigh, and the gastrocnemius and soleus form the bulk of the calf over the tibia and fibula. White tendinous insertions punctuate key attachment sites. Posterior muscle topography matters when you are teaching force vectors and attachment driven actions, because this side concentrates the major extensors of the shoulder, hip, knee, and trunk. The relationship between scapula, humerus, and the overlying trapezius and deltoid helps clarify common clinical patterns such as scapular dyskinesis and rotator cuff related pain, where altered scapulothoracic motion changes the subacromial space and load on the posterior cuff. It also supports surgical and sports medicine orientation, for example when planning a posterior approach to the hip where gluteus maximus splitting and the course of the sciatic nerve are central concerns. Landmarks are obvious.
