Presented in true lateral profile, the highlighted thorax spans from the superior thoracic aperture at the level of the clavicles down to the costal margin and xiphoid process inferiorly. The sternum sits anteriorly, while the ribs arc posterolaterally from the thoracic vertebrae to the costal cartilages, establishing the chest wall’s curvature and circumference. Posteriorly, the thoracic spine defines the dorsal boundary, with the scapular region positioned superior and posterior to the rib cage. A side view is the cleanest way to teach thoracic contour, pump-handle and bucket-handle rib motion, and the way sternal angle and costal cartilages project relative to the vertebral column. Clinically, this profile corresponds to the standard lateral chest radiograph, where retrosternal clear space, anterior mediastinal contours, and diaphragmatic domes are assessed, and where chest wall deformities such as pectus excavatum or pectus carinatum are easiest to appreciate. It also supports surface anatomy for procedures that track along rib orientation, including intercostal drain placement (aiming just superior to the rib to avoid the intercostal neurovascular bundle).
