Description
Parietal bone landmarks dominate the calvarial outer table in this illustration, centered on the broad external surface lateral to the sagittal suture. Medially, the serrated sagittal suture outlines the superior border where right and left parietals meet, while the coronal suture lies anteriorly and the lambdoid suture defines the posterior margin toward the occipital bone. Laterally and inferiorly, the parietal bone approaches the squamous suture with the temporal bone, and the parietal eminence (tuber parietale) creates a gentle convexity on the most prominent part of the surface. Superior and inferior temporal lines arc across the lateral aspect as attachment ridges for temporalis fascia and muscle. Outer-surface parietal anatomy matters because it is the palpable roof of the cranial vault and a frequent site of direct-impact fractures, including linear fractures that can track toward the sagittal suture where the superior sagittal sinus lies immediately deep to the midline. A small parietal foramen, when present near the posterior part of the sagittal suture, transmits an emissary vein and can be mistaken for a lytic defect on skull radiographs or CT when readers are not oriented to its typical location. The fixed viewpoint and isolation of the external surface help separate suture morphology from fracture lines, and they make the temporal lines easier to teach than on a fully assembled skull.
