Description
Arising from the superficial temporal artery anterior to the auricle, the frontal branch ascends within the superficial fascia of the temporal region and then sweeps anterosuperiorly across the temple toward the lateral forehead. Along its course it lies superficial to the temporalis muscle and deep to the thin scalp tissues, crossing the zygomatic arch region before distributing over the frontal bone; small arteriolar offshoots are suggested as it approaches the frontoparietal scalp. Underlying skeletal landmarks such as the cranium, zygomatic arch, mandible, and upper cervical vertebrae provide positional reference, while superficial veins track in parallel with the arterial path and fine peripheral nerves are indicated in the same corridor. Frontal branch anatomy matters because it is the dominant arterial supply encountered during temporal and forehead incisions, and it sits in the same operative field as the temporal branch of the facial nerve as that nerve crosses the zygomatic arch toward frontalis.
