Description
Centered within a semi-transparent anterior thorax, the heart sits in the middle mediastinum with its apex directed inferolaterally to the left and its base oriented posterosuperiorly toward the great vessels. The ascending aorta rises superiorly from the left ventricle, giving way to the aortic arch before continuing as the descending aorta along the left side of the vertebral column, while the pulmonary trunk emerges anterior to the ascending aorta and bifurcates toward the lungs. Superior and inferior venae cavae return to the right atrium on the patient’s right, and a body-wide arterial (red) and venous (blue) network radiates distally into the neck, upper limbs, trunk, and lower limbs with capillary beds suggested peripherally. Clear midline landmarks. Anterior orientation matters because it matches the way clinicians first encounter cardiac anatomy in physical exam, frontal chest radiography, and many teaching schematics of systemic versus pulmonary circulation. The spatial relationship of the pulmonary trunk anterior to the ascending aorta, and the right-sided course of the venae cavae into the right atrium, helps anchor common interpretations of mediastinal contours and catheter trajectories.
