Description
Posterior torso transparency reveals the thoracic viscera with the heart centered in the middle mediastinum, its apex directed anteroinferiorly toward the left. The right and left lungs flank the pericardial silhouette laterally, while the esophagus descends in the posterior mediastinum toward the gastroesophageal junction, lying posterior to the left atrium. Inferiorly, the diaphragm separates the thorax from the upper abdominal organs, with the liver occupying the right hypochondrium and the stomach and spleen positioned more superiorly and laterally on the left, above the coils of small intestine and the framing large intestine. A posterior perspective is useful because it matches the way clinicians think during back-based approaches and imaging correlation, where the vertebral column and posterior mediastinum provide consistent landmarks for the heart and great vessel region even when surface anatomy is obscured. The relationship of the esophagus to the left atrium and pericardium is a frequent teaching point in transesophageal echocardiography and in complications such as left atrial enlargement, where posterior displacement or impression on the esophagus can matter. It also supports cross-sectional reasoning for pericardial effusion and posterior pleural pathology, where fluid or consolidation can alter the apparent cardiac borders against the lungs. Use this artwork in gross anatomy and cardiothoracic modules to reinforce mediastinal organization, lung-heart adjacency, and the oblique orientation of the cardiac apex.
