Presented in a spherical profile, the human blastocyst is organized around a fluid-filled blastocoel bounded by an outer trophoblast layer, with a compact inner cell mass (embryoblast) clustered eccentrically toward one pole. Individual blastomeres form the contiguous cellular shell, while a thin, translucent zona pellucida encases the conceptus and sits superficial to the trophoblast. Polarity is implied by the embryonic pole (inner cell mass) opposite the abembryonic pole, a spatial relationship that underlies subsequent bilaminar disc formation. This stage matters because it is the first time the embryo separates into cell lineages with distinct fates: trophoblast for the chorion and much of the placenta, and embryoblast for the fetus proper. Implantation begins when the blastocyst hatches from the zona pellucida and the trophoblast differentiates into cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast, the latter invading endometrium and establishing early maternal blood contact, a sequence central to ectopic implantation, early pregnancy loss, and abnormal placentation. Timing and morphology at this point also anchor IVF grading, where inner cell mass cohesion and trophoblast cellularity correlate with implantation potential.
