Description
Rendered within a semi-transparent male trunk, the trachea descends in the anterior neck into the thorax, where the right and left lungs occupy the pleural cavities on either side of the mediastinum. Inferior to the lungs, the diaphragm forms the boundary between thoracic and abdominal cavities, with the stomach sitting in the left upper quadrant and the liver positioned more superiorly and to the right, overlapping the stomach anteriorly. Coiled loops of small intestine fill the central abdomen, while the large intestine frames them peripherally, with the transverse colon crossing superiorly and the ascending and descending segments tracking along the right and left flanks. Gallbladder and pancreas are suggested in their expected relationships to the inferior liver and posterior stomach. Orientation is immediate. For teaching spatial anatomy, this arrangement clarifies which organs are solid and relatively fixed (liver, stomach) versus hollow and mobile (small bowel, colon), and how that affects physical exam and procedural planning. The diaphragm’s dome and the liver’s right-sided dominance help explain why basal pneumonia, pleural effusion, or a subphrenic abscess can refer pain to the shoulder via the phrenic nerve. Organ adjacency matters in trauma and acute abdomen, where a right lower rib fracture can lacerate liver and a distended colon can obscure peritoneal signs. Use this plate in gross anatomy and surface anatomy modules to anchor topography of the thorax and abdomen, or in radiology teaching when introducing how chest radiographs and abdominal CT localize pathology by quadrant and compartment. It also fits patient-education materials discussing age-related changes in body habitus and how they influence palpation, auscultation, and expected organ position during bedside assessment.
