Description
Posterior elements of a typical thoracic vertebra center on the paired laminae, broad plates of bone that extend medially from the pedicles and meet in the midline to form the base of the spinous process. Each lamina forms the posterolateral wall of the vertebral arch, lying posterior to the vertebral foramen and medial to the transverse processes, with the superior and inferior articular processes rising near the junction of pedicle and lamina. The spinous process projects posteriorly and inferiorly in the thoracic region, while the laminae slope to complete the roof of the spinal canal. Lamina anatomy matters any time posterior decompression is planned, because the lamina defines the surgical corridor for thoracic laminectomy and laminotomy and sets the boundary between paraspinal muscle attachments and the dura within the vertebral canal.
