Description
Maxillary nasal notch (incisura nasalis maxillae) forms the sharp, concave margin on the anterosuperior body of the maxilla that outlines the lateral boundary of the anterior nasal aperture (piriform aperture). Superiorly, the notch continues into the frontal process of the maxilla, while inferiorly it approaches the anterior nasal spine at the midline and the alveolar process with its dental sockets more laterally and inferiorly. Medial to the notch lies the entrance to the nasal cavity, and lateral to it the facial surface of the maxilla curves toward the infraorbital region and zygomatic process. The edge quality of the rim is emphasized. Clinically, this bony contour matters whenever you need a reliable landmark for the anterior nasal airway and midface projection, because the piriform aperture is a fixed reference in septorhinoplasty planning, congenital cleft assessment, and reconstruction after trauma. Fracture lines in Le Fort I and II patterns commonly traverse the maxilla near the nasal aperture, and comminution along the nasal notch can alter alar base width and nasal sill support even when the nasal bones remain intact.
