Description
Lumbar vertebral body dominates the anterior portion of a typical lumbar vertebra, forming a broad, kidney-shaped weight bearing mass positioned inferior to the vertebral foramen and anterior to the laminae and spinous process. Its superior and inferior vertebral endplates appear as smooth, slightly concave surfaces that interface with the adjacent intervertebral discs, while stout pedicles arise posterolaterally from the body to form the lateral walls of the vertebral canal. Cortical bone outlines the periphery and encloses trabecular bone, with a posterior basivertebral foramen region implied near the central posterior body where venous channels traverse. Orientation is grounded in anatomical position, with the vertebral body anterior, pedicles posterior and lateral, and the endplates superior and inferior. Clinical teaching often centers on the lumbar body because this is where compressive loads concentrate during standing, lifting, and axial impact, making it the common site for vertebral compression fractures and osteoporotic height loss. Endplate integrity also matters in disc degeneration, Schmorl nodes, and Modic-type marrow signal changes on MRI, all of which correlate to pain patterns and spinal biomechanics. Lighting and surface definition help separate the vertebral body from the posterior elements so you can explain load transmission from disc to cancellous bone, then to the cortical shell. Big bone.
