Description
Inferior articular facet of a typical cervical vertebra occupies the posterolateral aspect of the vertebral arch, forming the caudal half of the zygapophysial (facet) joint with the superior articular facet of the vertebra below. From this inferior perspective, the smooth hyaline cartilage bearing surface sits just lateral to the base of the spinous process and posterior to the pedicle, with the lamina sweeping medially toward the vertebral foramen. The facet’s rim is continuous with cortical bone, and adjacent landmarks such as the articular process, lamina, and portions of the transverse process frame the joint surface in fixed spatial relation. Sharp bony margins stand out. Facet orientation in the cervical spine drives coupled motion and also shapes pathology, so a clean inferior view helps you teach why subaxial facets (C3 to C7) tend to be more oblique and why the C2 to C3 region behaves differently.
