Description
Visible within the semi-transparent adult female model, the axial skeleton reads clearly in lateral profile: cervical vertebrae supporting the skull base, a thoracic column aligned posterior to the rib cage, five lumbar vertebrae anterior to the sacrum, and the sacrum tapering toward the coccyx. Vertebral bodies stack anterior to the vertebral canal, while spinous processes project posteriorly, creating the familiar posterior contour from the cervicothoracic junction to the lumbosacral angle. Superiorly, the cranium caps the cervical spine; inferiorly, the sacrum anchors the column to the pelvis, with the hip region suggested by the body contour even if the pelvic bones are not the primary emphasis. Arms rest slightly abducted with the palms forward, helping maintain standard anatomical position for orientation. A side view of the female bony framework is the clearest way to teach normal sagittal alignment, including physiologic cervical and lumbar lordosis and thoracic kyphosis. That alignment has direct clinical relevance: exaggerated thoracic kyphosis and vertebral height loss are hallmark findings in osteoporotic compression fractures, which disproportionately affect postmenopausal women and cluster at the thoracolumbar junction.
