Description
Parietal lobes dominate the dorsal posterior cerebrum in this posterior-oriented illustration, with right and left hemispheres separated by the longitudinal fissure and meeting along the midline near the precuneus on the medial surface. The superior parietal lobule occupies the superomedial convexity, while the inferior parietal lobule curves laterally toward the supramarginal and angular gyri at the temporoparietal junction. Posterior boundaries with the occipital lobe are suggested by the parieto-occipital region, where the parietal cortex transitions inferiorly and posteriorly toward the visual association areas of the occipital pole. Sulcal patterning emphasizes cortical expansion and the way parietal cortex wraps around the posterior aspects of the hemisphere. Parietal anatomy matters because lesions here produce deficits that map cleanly to cortical territory, and a posterior viewpoint helps you localize them relative to the midline and occipital border. Hemispatial neglect classically follows right inferior parietal damage, while dominant (usually left) angular gyrus involvement supports the clinical cluster of Gerstmann syndrome (acalculia, agraphia, finger agnosia, left-right disorientation). Small differences in gyral exposure influence neurosurgical planning for parietal craniotomies, where preserving cortex near the postcentral region and posterior parietal association areas reduces postoperative sensory loss and visuospatial impairment.
