Description
Preoccipital notch marks the inferolateral margin where the temporal lobe meets the occipital lobe. From an inferior perspective, the indentation sits along the ventral border of the cerebral hemisphere, lateral to the tentorial surface, with the posterior inferior temporal region lying anterior to it and the inferior occipital surface extending posteriorly toward the occipital pole. Nearby ventral landmarks that typically frame this territory include the fusiform (occipitotemporal) gyrus, the inferior temporal gyrus laterally, and the parahippocampal gyrus and uncus more medially on the basal temporal surface. Clinically, the preoccipital notch helps you define the temporal-occipital boundary when describing lesions on the ventral cerebrum, where sulcal patterns alone can be inconsistent between individuals.
