Description

Anteriorly, the distal radius and its styloid process form the dominant lateral landmark at the wrist, projecting distally on the radial side relative to the scaphoid and trapezium. A tight articular capsule hugs the radial styloid and adjacent distal radial margin, blending proximally with the radiocarpal capsule and distally with capsular attachments along the proximal carpal row. Medial to this prominence, the distal ulna and ulnar side of the carpus fall away from the radial styloid, clarifying the asymmetry between the radial and ulnar columns of the wrist. Cartilage is suggested at the radiocarpal and intercarpal joint lines. Clinically, the capsule around the radial styloid sits in the same neighborhood as the first dorsal compartment and the radial collateral ligament complex, so pain and swelling here often enter the differential for de Quervain tenosynovitis versus radiocarpal synovitis or capsular sprain after a fall on an outstretched hand. The anterior perspective also supports teaching of surface anatomy: the radial styloid is palpable, and its relationship to the scaphoid guides interpretation of snuffbox tenderness and suspected scaphoid fracture, even when initial radiographs are negative. A compact capsule matters. It limits translation while permitting the coupled motions that make the wrist functional. Use this artwork in gross anatomy labs, hand and wrist modules for orthopedic or plastic surgery trainees, and figure sets for journal articles discussing radial-sided wrist pain, radiocarpal arthroscopy portals, or capsular repair and plication techniques. It also pairs well with imaging primers that correlate palpation landmarks with PA and oblique wrist radiographs. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
