Anterior head and neck anatomy is rendered to emphasize the cervical branch of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) as it exits the parotid region and courses inferiorly toward the submandibular and upper cervical triangle. From this frontal perspective, the nerve travels superficial to the upper neck musculature, running deep to the platysma while crossing the inferior border of the mandible in the vicinity of the facial vessels. The mandible and adjacent skull base provide bony reference points, and the sternocleidomastoid frames the lateral neck as a consistent landmark for the nerve’s distal descent. Clean color separation keeps the nerve legible against the red muscular field. Surgical planning often depends on this specific pathway. During rhytidectomy, submandibular approaches, or superficial procedures along the mandibular border, traction or transection of the cervical branch can denervate the platysma and contribute to asymmetric lower facial animation and banding. The anterior orientation also supports teaching the classic distinction between facial motor branches and the superficially interlacing cervical plexus cutaneous nerves in the same region.
