Description
Framed in a superior cutaway of the male skull, the trigeminal nerve (CN V) is seen at the trigeminal (semilunar) ganglion with the maxillary nerve (V2) coursing anteriorly toward the foramen rotundum in the middle cranial fossa. A small recurrent meningeal branch of the maxillary nerve turns back to the dura mater, running along the endocranial surface near the sphenoid and adjacent middle meningeal vascular grooves, while other cranial nerves appear in yellow as spatial reference within the cranial cavity. Orbital margins, nasal cavity, and maxillary dentition anchor orientation, with the dura positioned deep to the calvarial bone and superficial to the intracranial neurovascular structures. Fine relationships are the point. Clinically, the meningeal branch of V2 matters because it carries sensory afferents from dura in the anterior and middle cranial fossae, a pathway implicated in referred craniofacial pain and some headache patterns that track trigeminal distributions. This cutaway angle clarifies why lesions around the foramen rotundum, cavernous sinus region, or sphenoid bone can produce V2 territory symptoms without primary maxillary pathology. It also supports teaching the distinction between the recurrent meningeal branches from V1, V2, and V3 and their proximity to meningeal vessels, a real consideration during middle fossa approaches and when interpreting perineural tumor spread along trigeminal divisions.
