Seen from a superior (calvarial) perspective, the cranial dura mater forms a smooth, pale sheet draped over the cerebral convexities, spanning from frontal pole anteriorly to occipital pole posteriorly. A midline partition corresponds to the falx cerebri, seated in the interhemispheric fissure and separating the right and left cerebral hemispheres along the sagittal plane. Laterally, the dura follows the contour of the parietal convexity, while the superior midline corresponds to the course of the superior sagittal sinus within the attached margin of the falx. Minimal cortical surface relief is presented, so sulci and gyri are intentionally de-emphasized in favor of meningeal topography. This superior dural view matters when you need to teach or plan around venous sinus anatomy and dural reflections rather than cortical landmarks. Tears of bridging veins as they traverse from the cerebral surface to the superior sagittal sinus produce classic convexity subdural hematomas, and a top-down orientation helps explain why blood tracks over the hemisphere but is limited by the falx at the midline. Neurosurgical exposure during a midline craniotomy also starts with these same dural relationships, and the falx becomes a fixed landmark for orienting the interhemispheric approach.
