Description
Centered in the right upper quadrant of a male child’s torso, the semi-transparent liver sits superior to the small, pear-shaped gallbladder, which lies on the visceral (inferior) surface near the porta hepatis. The fundus projects anteriorly and inferiorly from the gallbladder body, while the neck angles medially toward the cystic duct. From there, the biliary tree is traced proximally to the right and left hepatic ducts and distally toward the common bile duct, positioned medial to the gallbladder and descending toward the duodenum. Ribs and costal margin frame the organs to reinforce pediatric topography. Clear orientation. Pediatric biliary anatomy is not just a scaled-down adult pattern, and this view helps teach the normal relationships that guide ultrasound and surgical planning when a child presents with right upper quadrant pain, jaundice, or suspected cholecystitis. Depicting the cystic duct joining the common hepatic duct is useful when discussing choledochal cysts and biliary atresia differentials, and it sets the stage for understanding why a distended gallbladder can be seen with distal obstruction while an absent or contracted gallbladder may raise concern in atresia.
