Placenta adheres to the uterine wall, and the umbilical cord courses from the fetal umbilicus to the placental disk, suspended within amniotic fluid. Maternal bony landmarks, including portions of the costal margin and pelvic ring, frame the relationship between uterus and birth canal. Week 25 sits at the edge of meaningful counseling about threatened preterm birth, when fetal viability, lung immaturity, and the likelihood of intraventricular hemorrhage start to dominate clinical decision making.
